Tree breeding

High-quality, resistant and climate-adapted plants lay the foundation for a profitable and sustainable use of forest. Skogforsk genetically improves trees for the Swedish forestry sector.

Plant breeding and regeneration are the first stages in a chain of measures that lay the foundation for a profitable and sustainable use of forest.

Skogforsk is responsible for forest tree breeding in Sweden. We work primarily with Scots pine, Norway spruce, lodgepole pine and birch, but some of our plant breeding activities involve species such as hybrid ash, Douglas fir, larch and Sitka spruce.

The objective of our forest plant breeding is to provide the forestry sector with the best possible plant materials, and ensure that no important genetic strains are lost for the future. We develop forest trees that grow better, are more resistant, and have better wood quality. We are also preparing for future climate and environmental changes.
