Do you want to improve forest management in southern Sweden?

FRAS is a new cooperation project that aims to improve forest management in southern Sweden. Now we are seeking doctoral students.

We have high demands on the forest. It will provide raw material for buildings, renewable energy, chemical products and pulp. Forestry should be effective, but at the same time maintaining important natural and cultural values. In addition, the forest should offer social values such as recreation, hunting and tourism.

To fulfil these goals, this entails major challenges for forest management. Do you want to contribute to and further develop forest management in southern Sweden to meet the needs of the future?

If yes, a doctoral student in FRAS can be something for you. "FRAS - Future Silviculture in Southern Sweden" is jointly run by Linnaeus University (LNU), Skogforsk and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in close cooperation with the forest sector in southern Sweden. The program consists of six PhD student projects that focus on different silvicultural aspects. Together, the projects take a holistic approach to the whole forest management chain. The six research projects are:

  1. Regeneration of Scots pine
  2. Effective regenerations
  3. Pre-commercial thinning for diverse forest types
  4. Thinning and biodiversity conservation
  5. Effective silvicultural treatments
  6. Silviculture and wood quality in mixed stands

Each project is run by a doctoral student together with a group of supervisors consisting of researchers from all three research organizations and a supervisor from the industry. Each of the three research organizations will employ and be responsible for two doctoral students each.

We see that you as an applicant have an advanced education in forest management or equivalent. Since communication is an important part of the program, good skills in both oral and written communication are necessary. More information about specific qualifications can be found under the respective project description. Skogforsk, SLU and LNU are workplaces where diversity and even gender distribution are important, which will be reflected in the recruitment process.

You may apply for more than one position as a FRAS doctoral student, but you must send a separate application to each project. All FRAS doctoral projects will be assigned during the fall of 2017, given that the program is fully financed.

Application deadline is June 12, 2017. Applications for projects 1, 3 and 4 can be made via SLU´s web.

Applications for projects 2, 5 and 6 can be made via LNU´s web.

There you also find more information about each project.
