Barrotsplantan är oftast äldre och grövre än täckrotsplantan. Det gör att den bättre står emot vegetationskonkurrens, froster och snytbaggeangrepp.
Barrotsplantor är oftast 3-4-åriga. De är vanliga vid hjälpplantering. Barrotsplantor planteras med borr eller hacka.
