NovelTree
– for genetically improved forest products
Sustainable climate-change resistant forest ecosystems, a wider range of high value forest products and tree species with an increased tolerance to pests and diseases are challenges facing today’s forest geneticists and tree breeders.
EU FP7 "Life Sciences, Biotechnology and Biochemistry for Sustainable Non-Food Products and Processes" project NovelTree, the full title of which is “Novel tree breeding strategies”, is designed to enhance the genetic composition and characteristics of trees in planted forests to satisfy the needs of consumers and the forest-based sector for increased quality, quantity and sustainability and decreased vulnerability in forest products.
The four-year large collaborative project started on May 1, 2008. It has a total budget of 6.37 million euros with an EC contribution of 4.1 million euros. It is composed of 15 public and private European partners and is coordinated by Catherine Bastien from INRA, France.
