Forest bioenergy

Forest bioenergy

Skogforsk is developing effective systems for producing forest-based bioenergy fuel. The focus is on technology, methods and systems for logging residues, stumps, smaller-dimension trees and the supply chain.

Current research

More rational management of forest residue

This project focuses on more efficient management for greater customer value and lower costs. Practical tests with green logging residue are also carried out. Skogforsk has also trained logging residue instructors who can train machinery crews.

New methods for harvesting stumps

Faster and less harmful methods are being developed for both drivers and soil. New technological solutions are also under development.

More valuable stumps

Can the use of stumps maintain or improve fuel quality? Skogforsk aims to develop valuable fuel at a reasonable cost. An important step is to increase payloads in order to reduce transport costs.

Great potential in smaller-dimensioned trees

New technology and new methods for logging smaller-dimensioned trees means that large volumes from such stands could be interesting as fuel. Technology is immature and potential great.

More efficient logistics

Skogforsk has developed new software for optimizing logistics, and the systems are now being tested.

Harvester data simplifies planning

Our research has enabled the production of cartographic documentation for tactical planning of forest fuels using the harvesters’ production data.

Railways open up for new fuel

Development of new transport options, terminals and long-distance rail transport can add large volumes of fuel to the system.
