Research station in Ekebo

The southern research station of the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, Ekebo, has a nursery with computer-controlled glasshouses as well as possibilities for outdoor cultivation. A well-equipped laboratory has been developed during the last decade. Here, plants from tissue cultures, i.e. somatic embryogenesis, are produced, and molecular genetic research is also performed.
An extensive breeding work is carried out in the station in order to provide the southern Swedish forestry with the best possible plant material. The work is concentrated towards Norway spruce and Scots pine, although birch, noble hardwoods and other broadleaved species are also included.
Research work aiming at develop the hardwood forestry is also performed in Ekebo. The work is mainly directed to wood production tasks but other values in a multiple-use forestry, like biodiversity, cultural heritage and recreation, are also considered. Recently, Ekebo has become a center of forest regeneration research and development.
